The Cutest Bed and Breakfast in Vermont’s Northeast Kingdom
Rabbit Hill Inn - A historic luxury bed and breakfast with award winning dining and the cutest decor. Situated in Lower Waterford, VT - it’s the perfect location for easily exploring both Vermont’s Northeast Kingdom and the White Mountains Region of New Hampshire.
The Warmest Welcome
I’ve stayed at the Rabbit Hill Inn two times (as of writing this blog post) and each time I have been completely blown away by the experience. From the moment you walk in the door, the super friendly team at the Rabbit Hill Inn are there to make sure you have the best stay.
Your check-in process begins with a tour of the first floor, overview of the inn’s history, and all the logistical details you need to know for your stay. The check-in process ends with a walk to your room and a quick overview of the room’s amenities. This is where you will also find locally made chocolates and a hand written welcome note waiting for you.
The Property
The inn has a long history that dates all the way back to 1795 when Samuel Hodby purchased the property to build an inn for travelers passing through the area. In 1825, Jonathan Cummings followed Hodby’s lead by building a home and workshop next door (the home is now the main inn for the Rabbit today). Both properties were purchased by a new owner who expanded the inn by adding on a parlor and sitting room in 1840.
After many years and owners later, the inn still welcomes guests to enjoy this beautiful space in Vermont’s Northeast Kingdom.
The Guest Rooms
The inn offers 19 uniquely decorated guest rooms across the main inn, the 1795 house, and the Carriage House, which is attached to the main inn. You’ll find three types of room offerings: Luxury Suites, Superior Suites, and classic rooms. The Luxury Suites are the most spacious with a sitting area, spa tub, and fireplace; some may also have walk out balconies. The Superior Suites are slightly smaller but have similar amenities. Classic rooms provide a more standard bedroom size without the full seating area, but are no less inviting. On my first visit to the Rabbit Inn during the fall, I stayed in the Rose room and absolutely loved it! While being a classic room it still had two seats and a small fireplace.
My Room
On this visit, I stayed in The Loft which is one of the inn’s Luxury Suites. If you didn’t know this room was here, you might miss it. The room is located behind a secret door that takes you up a hidden staircase.
The room itself was so spacious yet very cozy. I loved the fireplace in this room, which was perfect on a spring evening in Vermont when it still gets a little chilly outside.
And one of the extra fun features that I love at the inn is that each room has a fuzzy stuffed animal rabbit. My rabbit for the Loft was Scruffles.
The bathroom was super clean and included a full vanity where you could lay out all your toiletries and makeup, a soaking tub, and a walk-in shower. It’s all about the little details too and even the spare toilet paper roll was looking cute - with a little Rabbit Hill Inn logo printed on it.
The Common Areas
The first floor of the inn contains all of the common rooms including a parlor room with comfy couches and plenty of tables. This is also where you will find afternoon tea and treats which are served daily. On this visit, I found delicious lemon bars and brownies.
The Snooty Fox
Enjoy pre-dinner cocktails at the Snooty Fox Pub. With lots of cozy vibes and fox decor, this may be one of my favorite spaces in the inn. They offer a great selection of craft cocktails and non-alcoholic options, as well as beer and wine. I ordered my favorite cocktail, the Bees Knees, which was made with Barr Hill Gin from a local Vermont distillery.
You’ll also find a limited menu featuring some items offered in the restaurant as well as pub items like dry-rubbed wings.
Pair your cocktail with one of the puzzles or games available. I tried one of the inn’s Stave puzzles, which are locally made in Vermont. The puzzle was fun and challenging to put together and the final product was absolutely beautiful.
The Dining Space
Dinner in the on-site award willing 24 Carrot restaurant is a must. The setting is beautiful and the food is amazing. I recommend making a reservation in advance of your stay to be sure to get your preferred time. I have had several different dishes here and have loved them all. Your meal comes with a bread plate that even includes butter shaped in a carrot. On this visit, I had the broccolini soup, the fungi orecchiette pasta, and of course I had to have the carrot cake for dessert.
A complimentary 3-course breakfast is included with your stay and you don’t want to miss it. You’ll start with a pastry and fruit, followed by yogurt and home made granola, and then for your main course you’ll choose between a sweet or savory option. I opted for the savory option which included eggs over a bed of arugula and homemade toast.
The Grounds
There are lots of beautiful sitting areas outside including front porch seating, spots on the patio where you can enjoy s’mores by the fireplace on a dry evening, or find a cozy spot in one of the Adirondack chairs on the back lawn.
The Gift Shop
Stop by the gift shop before heading home to find a selection of Rabbit Hill Inn items. You can also bring home your very own rabbit or fox.
